SUMMARY:AI in the Real World
DESCRIPTION:With over one-third of entry-level job postings and 50% of all technology roles now calling for AI skills\, hands-on exposure to artificial intelligence has quickly shifted from a resume booster to an essential requirement for college graduates entering the workforce. But how do foundational computer science concepts translate into real-world AI applications and high-impact career opportunities?\n\nJoin us for an interactive virtual panel hosted by UMBC’s Computer Science undergraduate program at UMBC-Shady Grove. Featuring a panel of student alumni and leading industry partners\, this event explores the rise of artificial intelligence\, its expanding role across the workplace\, and how classroom lessons directly power career success. \n\nhttps://events.blackthorn.io/3t1z5Tf7/5a2HVX2244n

SUMMARY:Homeschool STEM Day: STEM Trailblazers: Innovation and Discovery
DESCRIPTION:This fall Baltimore County 4-H is hosting a Homeschool STEM Day on October 15\, 2026 from 1-3 pm. The theme is Honoring Hispanic STEM Pioneers. At this event we will highlight the innovation\, creativity and contributions of these scientists to the greater community. For this fair-style event\, we will highlight each scientist\, share their contributions\, and include a hands-on activity to complement the learning. Activities are geared toward 6- to 18-year-olds\, and families are welcome to "drop in" at any time during the event. There is no fee to attend\, and activities can serve as a starting point for deeper conversations or extension lessons at home. \n\nThe list of trailblazers we plan to highlight is below:\n\nEllen Ochoa — Engineer and astronaut; the first Hispanic woman in space. Her engineering work included optical systems used in image processing.\nMario Molina — Chemist and Nobel Prize winner whose research helped explain how chlorofluorocarbons damage the ozone layer.\nLuis Walter Alvarez — Physicist and Nobel Prize winner known for major contributions to particle physics and for helping develop the asteroid-impact theory linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs.\nYnes Mexia — Botanist and plant collector who documented thousands of plant specimens across the Americas\, including many previously unknown to science.\nGuillermo González Camarena — Engineer and inventor who developed an early color television transmission system.\nCarlos Juan Finlay — Physician and scientist who helped establish that mosquitoes transmit yellow fever.\nAlbert Báez — Physicist who helped develop important X-ray imaging techniques and advanced the use of X-rays in scientific research.\nAntonia Novello — Physician and public health leader who became the first Hispanic U.S. Surgeon General.\nDr. Benigno “Ben” Villalon — Texas A&M plant scientist and pepper breeder known for developing improved chile pepper varieties\, including the TAM Mild Jalapeño\, and for breeding peppers for disease resistance \n\nTo register\, please click https://forms.gle/QbyeGX6GNt786DRo9 to sign up! SUMMARY:Coding with Python (Ages 10-14)
DESCRIPTION:The Richard Montgomery High School robotics team\, Rocket Robotics\, is excited to offer a free\, 6-week coding course for middle school students\, designed to introduce beginners to the fundamentals of programming and spark interest in programming and robotics. This hands-on course will cover the fundamentals of coding using one of the most popular programming languages\, Python. Students will receive guided instruction over the 6-session course which will help them understand key concepts (such as basic Python syntax\, working with and manipulating data\, control structures like loops and if statements\, and creating reusable methods) and prepare them to further advance their coding skills. \n\n\n\nExperienced high school mentors will guide the participants\, providing personalized support and encouragement. With each session building on the last\, students will not only gain a solid foundation in Python programming that they can apply in robotics and other coding projects\, but also the confidence to explore further in the world of technology and robotics. Whether you're new to coding or looking to strengthen your skills\, this course will provide a supportive and engaging environment to get started with Python. \n\n\n\nStudents are requested to bring their own laptop computers if possible. If they cannot\, a limited number of laptops will be available for student use during the course. \n\n\n\nCourse runs Thursdays from October 8 – November 12. \n\n\n\nFor ages 10 to 14. \n\n\n\nRegistration Recommended \n\n\n\nAccommodation Requests \n\n\n\nTo request an accommodation\, contact the library branch where you want the accommodation. If they are unable to help\, or if you need an accommodation for an online resource or event\, complete our Accommodation Request Form online or call Library Administration at 240-777-0002. \n\n\n\nGEN 1.1 01/06/2022
