Capturing Your Instrument with a Microphone at Home

Start Date of Event: 10/09/2020

Event Times: 4:00 - 5:00 pm

Description:
Home recording has been a popular for decades among hobbyists and professionals. Many highly successful recordings have been made in people’s homes, including several that have won Grammy awards. With the pandemic nearly all musicians are finding themselves recording at home, and with all their extra time off the road we can expect to see a lots of new music coming out in the coming months. Quality inexpensive microphones and software have made it possible for you to make great sounding recordings at home IF you know how to use the microphone properly AND take care to treat the room acoustically, even with common items you probably have already in your house. Join this presentation for a brief overview or microphone technology and room acoustics and a demonstration of best practices.

Scott Melcalf will be leading the program. Scott is an audio engineer and music technologist based in Baltimore, where he is director of Recording Arts and Sciences at the Peabody Institute, program coordinator for the Sound Concentration of Hopkins’ Advanced Academic Programs MA degree in Film and Media, and associate director of The Sound Sleep Studio (research facility of The Sleeping Brain Lab, at Johns Hopkins Hospital).
