SUMMARY:AI IRL: Real Talk for Teens
DESCRIPTION:AI IRL: Real Talk for Teens is a four-session discussion series built around real AI headlines. Each session starts with a short news story\, separates fact from myth\, introduces one practical skill to try\, and opens the floor for conversation guided by teens’ questions. \nParticipants build practical\, responsible AI habits: verifying claims and sources\, recognizing bias and misinformation\, writing task-appropriate prompts\, crediting AI assistance when required\, and protecting privacy online. The final session includes a look at AI’s environmental impact\, tying into this year’s Maryland STEM Festival theme of ENERGY. \nEach session stands alone\, so participants can attend any or all and leave with something they can use right away for schoolwork\, early work experiences and resumes\, creative projects\, or daily life. Phones and laptops are welcome\, and snacks are provided. \nEvent runs from 10/22 through 11/12

We offer two Art Exploration Teen Edition sessions on the fourth Wednesday and fourth Thursday of each month so that even more artists can join in the fun. \nIn October\, we will take a tour through the artistic kingdom of Alexander Viazmensky. Viazmensky is a Russian artist who worked in watercolors to paint eye-catching portraits of plant life. His primary subjects were mushrooms found around Northern Russia\, such as chanterelle\, porcini\, and birch mushrooms. We’ll learn about Viazmensky’s life and then do a cool art project inspired by his art! \nPLEASE NOTE: This program is designed for ages 9 to 18. Younger participants may have difficulty with the projects and/or concepts. \nPlease register each child who will be attending separately and only register for one session each month\, as both Wednesday and Thursday will be the same sessions. \nIf you have questions\, please contact the Potomac Branch at 301-375-7375 or email potomacref@ccplonline.org.

SUMMARY:Baltimore Hackerspace - Microwave Night

Ranging from woodworking to wireless security protocols\, from wiring a house to welding a BattleBot\, we’re here to help you take that next step. And “Microwave Night” is our annual party. \nAt Microwave Night we embrace our goofy side\, the side that wonders “what if???” We’ve all had those intrusive thoughts in the kitchen\, and on Microwave Night we let them all out. CDs? Tinfoil? What about two peeps holding knitting needles? A car airbag??? \nJoin us for a fun night of questionable choices\, and please bring that weird thing you’ve always wanted to microwave.

SUMMARY:Coding with Python - A Six-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:The Richard Montgomery High School robotics team\, Rocket Robotics\, is excited to offer a free\, 6-week coding course for middle school students\, designed to introduce beginners to the fundamentals of programming and spark interest in programming and robotics. This hands-on course will cover the fundamentals of coding using one of the most popular programming languages\, Python. Students will receive guided instruction over the 6-session course which will help them understand key concepts (such as basic Python syntax\, working with and manipulating data\, control structures like loops and if statements\, and creating reusable methods) and prepare them to further advance their coding skills. \nExperienced high school mentors will guide the participants\, providing personalized support and encouragement. With each session building on the last\, students will not only gain a solid foundation in Python programming that they can apply in robotics and other coding projects\, but also the confidence to explore further in the world of technology and robotics. Whether you’re new to coding or looking to strengthen your skills\, this course will provide a supportive and engaging environment to get started with Python. \nStudents are requested to bring their own laptop computers if possible. If they cannot\, a limited number of laptops will be available for student use during the course. \nClass is offered on 10/15\, 10/22\, 10/29\, 11/5\, 11/12\, 11/19

SUMMARY:AI IRL: Real Talk for Teens
DESCRIPTION:AI IRL: Real Talk for Teens is a four-session discussion series built around real AI headlines. Each session begins with a brief news story\, separating fact from myth\, introduces one practical skill to try\, and opens the floor for conversation guided by the teens’ questions. \nParticipants develop practical\, responsible AI habits by verifying claims and sources\, recognizing bias and misinformation\, crafting task-appropriate prompts\, crediting AI assistance when necessary\, and safeguarding online privacy. The final session includes a look at AI’s environmental impact\, tying into this year’s Maryland STEM Festival theme of ENERGY. \nEach session stands alone\, so participants can attend any or all and leave with something they can use right away for schoolwork\, early work experiences\, resumes\, creative projects\, or daily life. Phones and laptops are welcome\, and snacks are provided. \nEvent runs from 10/22 through 11/12

SUMMARY:Art Exploration Teen Edition: Botanical Art of Alexander Viazmensky
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of art history and learning advanced techniques.
