SUMMARY:Coding with Python - A Six-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:The Richard Montgomery High School robotics team\, Rocket Robotics\, is excited to offer a free\, 6-week coding course for middle school students\, designed to introduce beginners to the fundamentals of programming and spark interest in programming and robotics. This hands-on course will cover the fundamentals of coding using one of the most popular programming languages\, Python. Students will receive guided instruction over the 6-session course which will help them understand key concepts (such as basic Python syntax\, working with and manipulating data\, control structures like loops and if statements\, and creating reusable methods) and prepare them to further advance their coding skills. \nExperienced high school mentors will guide the participants\, providing personalized support and encouragement. With each session building on the last\, students will not only gain a solid foundation in Python programming that they can apply in robotics and other coding projects\, but also the confidence to explore further in the world of technology and robotics. Whether you’re new to coding or looking to strengthen your skills\, this course will provide a supportive and engaging environment to get started with Python. \nStudents are requested to bring their own laptop computers if possible. If they cannot\, a limited number of laptops will be available for student use during the course. \nClass is offered on 10/15\, 10/22\, 10/29\, 11/5\, 11/12\, 11/19 \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:AI IRL: Real Talk for Teens
DESCRIPTION:AI IRL: Real Talk for Teens is a four-session discussion series built around real AI headlines. Each session starts with a short news story\, separates fact from myth\, introduces one practical skill to try\, and opens the floor for conversation guided by teens’ questions. \nParticipants build practical\, responsible AI habits: verifying claims and sources\, recognizing bias and misinformation\, writing task-appropriate prompts\, crediting AI assistance when required\, and protecting privacy online. The final session includes a look at AI’s environmental impact\, tying into this year’s Maryland STEM Festival theme of ENERGY. \nEach session stands alone\, so participants can attend any or all and leave with something they can use right away for schoolwork\, early work experiences and resumes\, creative projects\, or daily life. Phones and laptops are welcome\, and snacks are provided. \nEvent runs from 10/22 through 11/12 \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Intro to GIMP Digital Art
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of the GIMP interface as you customize a rad cartoon cat! For ages 8 to 12. \nGIMP is an open-source graphics program—similar to Photoshop\, but free! GIMP allows you to create graphics or edit photos using a variety of customizable tools and features. This class will introduce kids to the interface and encourage them to express themselves through digital art! The projects our participants create will be displayed in the library. \nThis is a pilot program! Two sessions are currently planned\, one on October 25th and one on November 8th. At this time\, you may take only one class to make sure there is space for everyone! We hope to offer more sessions in the future depending on interest. Adult attendance to assist your child is strongly encouraged\, although we won’t have enough computers for adults to participate. Please arrive on time. \nThis program is for children ages 8 to 12. Registration is required. Sign up online or by calling the Quince Orchard library at 240-777-0200. \nKey Terms (to be covered as time allows): layers\, transparency\, float selection\, opacity\, color picker\, bucket tool\, pattern\, gradient \nThe Maryland STEM Festival is a month-long celebration of science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics designed to advance STEM and STEAM education for children and teens that takes place every fall. \nQuestions about this program? Contact the Quince Orchard branch at 240-777-0200 \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:The Higgs Boson and the Quest for New Physics: A Journey into the Heart of Matter
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Suyog Shrestha\, Assistant Professor of Physics at Washington College\, as we explore what scientists are doing today to uncover new physics that may one day rewrite our understanding of the universe. Through his collaborative work at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider\, including the Nobel Prize–winning discovery of the Higgs boson\, we are getting closer to answering fundamental questions about the universe. This discussion should enlighten and inspire the most curious. \nNo registration required. \nAbout Dr. Suyog Shrestha \nDr. Suyog Shrestha is an Assistant Professor of Physics at Washington College (Chestertown\, Maryland)\, where he leads the College’s involvement in the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. His research focuses on Higgs boson physics\, searches for new particles beyond the Standard Model\, and the application of machine learning in high-energy physics. Dr. Shrestha earned his B.A. from Grinnell College (2006)\, Ph.D. from Iowa State University (2014)\, and spent over seven years as a postdoctoral researcher at CERN before joining Washington College in 2022. In addition to his research\, he is deeply committed to undergraduate mentorship and STEM outreach – locally in Maryland and internationally in Nepal. \n\n\n	Related
